The tumor was benign, but the size of a rugby ball. The lipoma grows in the upper third of the thigh between the muscles, vessels, nerves and tendons in the area from the groin down.
In Lviv, surgeons at St. Luke’s Hospital a giant tumor from a volunteer, thus saving his leg from amputation. The First Medical Association of Lvov reported this on Thursday, February 22.
The tumor was reported to be benign but the size of a rugby ball, and the patient lived with the tumor in his hip for nearly 30 years.
The man sought help only when the tumor began to squeeze the veins and nearby vessels.
“The patient is 49-year-old Evgeniy Plekhanov from Lvov. Doctors discovered a lipoma, a benign formation that develops from adipose tissue cells, when he was 20. Even then, the formation was has grown into the surrounding tissues of the upper inner third of the thigh – muscles, nerves and blood vessels. Remove it completely – would mean performing a dangerous intervention for the patient. He may lose sensation in his entire leg . Therefore, then doctors at one of the city’s hospitals removed only part of the lipoma. They also warned the young man: the tumor may continue to grow,” said the report.
Doctors’ predictions were reasonable – the tumor was still growing.
“For the last 15 years, Evgeniy lived in Italy. There the man worked as a driver. And although he saw that the tumor was still growing over the years, due to his inactive lifestyle, it was not particularly bothered him. And he did not have the opportunity to be examined in the hospitals there “, said the message.
When a large-scale war began, the man returned to Ukraine and became a volunteer – he brought humanitarian aid to war victims and to hospitals.
“I am always on the move. Due to the regular stress on my legs, the pain in the upper thigh did not go away, and also radiated to the groin. In addition, the extremity began to go numb. Then Evgeniy turned to specialists of St. Luke’s Hospital for help. Here, doctors gave the patient an MRI and found that the lipoma had almost tripled in size since the first surgical intervention – to a size of 24×13 cm. It had grown in the upper third of the thigh between the muscles, vessels, nerves and tendons in the area from the groin down,” the doctors reported.
Due to the large size of the tumor, the blood flow in the arteries of the leg has deteriorated, and it is at risk of amutation.
“To avoid a partial or even complete stoppage of blood flow to the leg, which threatens amputation, we performed a complex intervention that required high precision and well-trained skills: we separated parts of the tumor from in the veins and arteries, and then it was completely removed without complications for the patient,” explained vascular surgeon, head of the department of interventional radiology Alexander Golub.
The day after the operation, the patient started walking.
“He finally got rid of both discomfort and pain. The man returned to his daily routine. And now he continues to volunteer to help our defenders and defenders on the front line,” rejoiced the doctors to their success.

We remind you that the surgeons removed a piece of stone from the soldier’s heart. How the stone got to the heart – the military does not know. The heart damage was revealed by a CT scan, which he underwent after experiencing significant discomfort.
