Experts noted that this discovery could be a scientific breakthrough in understanding how planets form.
Scientists have discovered a system of six planets orbiting the star HD 110067, which is 100 light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices. This is stated in a report published by the journal Nature.
The celestial body is known to be at least 4 billion years old and has a composition similar to Neptune – “a rocky body covered with a thick gas mantle” and not suitable for life.
The newly discovered planets, which are 1.94 to 2.85 times the radius of Earth, have high temperatures (166 to 526 degrees Celsius) and hydrogen-dominated atmospheres, scientists said.
Astronomers also added that all six orbits are conjugate, which leads to a rare phenomenon – a chain resonance of six celestial bodies. According to scientists, planets in resonance are especially important because they have a systematic architecture that remains almost unchanged from the moment of their birth.
It was previously reported that researchers for the first time determined the exact mass of the black hole at the center of the Milky Way.
