Less than six weeks after construction began on the rover perseverance from POT completed the creation of the first sample repository in another world.
Mission controllers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory POTin southern California, at 01:00 UTC on January 30, the rover was confirmed to have successfully dropped the tenth and final tube planned for storage.
Mars exploration
This milestone included precise planning and navigation to ensure the safe future collection of tubes as part of the Sample Return campaign from Mars NASA-ESA, the purpose of which is to bring samples Mars to Earth for further study.
During its scientific campaigns, the rover has taken several rock samples that the mission team considers scientifically important. A sample of every pair taken so far is now in a carefully organized vault in the Three Forks region of Jezero Crater. POT.
Samples from the field will serve as a reserve, while the other half will remain inside perseverancewhich will be the primary means of transporting samples to the lander for sample retrieval for the campaign.
Mission scientists believe that igneous and sedimentary cores provide an excellent cross-section of the geological processes that took place in Jezero shortly after the crater formed nearly 4 billion years ago. The rover also deposited an atmospheric sample and a so-called “master” tube, which is used to determine if samples being collected could be contaminated with materials that were brought back from Earth with the rover.
The titanium tubes were applied to the surface in an intricate zigzag pattern, with each sample spaced 5 to 15 meters apart to ensure they were safely retrieved. In addition to the time it took to create the reservoir, the team had to accurately map out the location of each combination of 18.6 cm tubing and glove (adapter) to find the samples, even if they were covered in dust.
The deposit is located on a flat surface at the base of an ancient fan-shaped river delta, formed long ago when the river flowed into the lake. (Europe Press)
