Congress banned him from traveling to Colombia
With 67 votes against, 42 votes in favour, and five abstentions, the August 4 plenary session of Congress rejected a bill that would allow the president to leave the country for the inauguration of Colombian President Gustavo Petro.
Legislator Adriana Tudela of Avanza País explained the reasons why President Pedro Castillo should not be allowed to leave the country, as the signs of corruption in his government are “overwhelming and numerous” under the current circumstances.
“He is present at the protocol act, so he does not have to go, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs may well go. Our responsibility is for the president to be accountable to the people he supposedly represents,” he said.
Alexander Soto, of the Alliance for Progress, pointed out at the time that it must be taken into account that the president is immersed in five tax investigations. He stated that the trip was protocol and would not change our relations with Colombia.
Pedro Castillo remained silent in front of the prosecutor’s office
President Pedro Castillo decided to remain silent during the diligence of the prosecutor’s office in order to answer for the cases of Petroper and the works awarded by the Ministry of Housing, as well as the departure of Mariano González from the Ministry of the Interior.
Castillo replicated the strategy he employed in his interrogation for alleged irregular promotions in the Armed Forces (FF.AA.) and the National Police of Peru (PNP), where he also chose to remain silent. Something that his lawyer justified.
After almost three hours at the headquarters of the public ministry, the head of state left the prosecutor’s office without making any statement to the press.
