Michelle Sayerexecutive president of the National Radio and Television Society (SNRTV), warned that the bill Free Peru, which requires a daily content quota of 40% of national media production; seeks mainly to control their content.

IN News extension, the leader noted that the legislative initiative, which has already been approved by the commissions for transport and culture; “Under the false heading of promoting national music, arts and culture in our country, they want to control media content.”

“When you read the bill, you don’t have to be an expert to understand it, it clearly says that 40% of media content should be for what they consider national production,” he said.

Sayer said the initiative does not liberate specialized radio stations this board. For example, he explained, classical music radio must change its nature to include the fee required by the rules.

“A person who loves to listen to classical music will not be able to listen to classical music because (radio) must abide by this rule,” he said.

The leader warned that the bill would condition the renewal or granting of a media license on compliance with the said cultural quota.

“This project has a very clear intention to control media content,” he said.

“Congressmen of all political extremes voted for, except Fujimorista bench who abstained. I want to think that congressmen have not carefully read this bill and have not understood that the intent is not primarily to renew or revoke media licenses,” he added.

For Seyer, the initiative not only threatens freedom of expression, but “people’s freedom to choose the content they like best.”
