After HYBE and ADOR did not respond to requests sent by NewJeans, the quintet announced their departure from the agency this Thursday, 28
On the morning of this Thursday, the 28th, NewJeans called an emergency press conference in South Korea, where they announced that, after the end of the deadline of 14 days stipulated by the artists for ADOR and HYBE to respond to their demands, a period that ends this Friday, the 29th, the quintet would be leaving the agency and the conglomerate.
In his statement, Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein explained that, during this period, even with them working normally, “HYBE and the current ADOR are not showing any desire to carry out reforms or listen to our requests”, a situation that resulted in the decision announced today.
The members also highlighted that “NewJeans is an ADOR artist, and ADOR is obliged to protect NewJeans. It is the most basic obligation an agency has. ADOR does not have the will or ability to protect NewJeans. If we remain here, it will be a waste of time, and our mental anguish will continue. More than anything, there is nothing we can gain in terms of our work, so the five of us feel that there is no reason at all to stay at ADOR.”
Check out the translation of part of the NewJeans statement during the press conference:
“As a result, the exclusive contracts between NewJeans and ADOR will terminate on November 29 at 12 p.m. KST. However, HYBE and ADOR are currently differentiating the two companies as a play on words, insisting that it cannot be a breach of contract because HYBE is to blame and not ADOR. However, as everyone knows, HYBE and ADOR are practically a single entity now. The ADOR we work with has already changed a lot, and the directors who were at the company before were all abruptly fired. Now they are differentiating between HYBE and ADOR, and we really cannot accept the argument that we should keep our exclusive contracts with ADOR which has been changed according to what HYBE wants, which has cut ties with the director [de videoclipe] who worked hard with us, who broke all that trust. As a result, we require rectification in relation to breaches of our contract and, as previously mentioned, the period for such rectification ends at midnight today. I’m not sure if you saw it yesterday, but [eles divulgaram] a reluctant statement that begins ‘This statement is in response to the actions required by the artists’ content certification’, with no desire for reform and for show only, as they have continually demonstrated, and no rectification has occurred for any of the requests we have made. We have expressed our opinions on several occasions, such as through the live broadcast and through this content certification, but we are so tired of their insincere attitude, and we feel once again that they have no sincerity towards us and that they have no desire to hear our requests. Working hours have passed, and there are less than four hours until midnight [no horário da Coreia do Sul]but no rectification was made, so the five of us will terminate our contracts immediately at midnight on November 29th.
When our exclusive contracts are terminated, the five of us will no longer be ADOR artists. Breaking away from ADOR, we plan to freely carry out the activities we sincerely want. However, we will carry out the promised and contracted activities that we have already scheduled. We will also carry out contracted advertising agreements as planned. We wanted to convey that we are truly grateful to the advertisers who always support us, and that they don’t need to worry. We do not want to cause any harm to others due to the termination of our contract. We don’t want that.
We have also seen several articles about penalties for breach of contract. We will not violate our exclusive contracts and never have. Until now, we have tried our best to carry out our activities, so we think there is no reason for us to pay penalties. In fact, it is the current ADOR and HYBE who have violated the contracts, leading to this current situation, so we believe that the current ADOR and HYBE are responsible.
Finally, when midnight passes tonight, there’s a possibility that the five of us won’t be able to use the NewJeans name for now, despite our wishes. However, the essence that the five of us are NewJeans will not change at all, and we have no idea of giving up the NewJeans name. To some people, NewJeans may seem like just a name or a trademark issue, but it’s not that simple for us. It is a name that holds the meaning of everything we have achieved from the first day the five of us met until now, so we will continue to work to secure the rights to the NewJeans name.”
