Real name or stage name? BTS opens up about their preferences

In one of their interviews, the members of BTS revealed the way they prefer to be called by their fans. Find it out!

In the artistic world, many celebrities end up deciding to adopt other names to be recognized in their careers, leaving the way they were named at birth as something more personal, being used only in their private moments alongside their closest friends and family.

Within K-pop, most idols decided to use famous stage names. In some groups, none of the members use their real names, such as aespa, a SM Entertainment girl group formed by Karina (Yu Jimin), Giselle (Aeri Uchinaga), Winter (Kim Minjeong) It is Ningning (Ning Yizhuo).

On the other hand, many still chose to continue with the names given to them by their parents. Among them, we can cite examples such as Jennie (BLACKPINK), Seulgi (Red Velvet), Sanha (STAR), Taemin (SHINee), Taeyeon (Girls’ Generation), and much more.

In general, when we evaluate complete formations, it is easy to find groups where some of the members use artistic names, while others continue with their original names — just as happens in BTS, composed of Jin (Kim Seokjin), RM (Kim Namjoon), Suga (Min Yoongi), J-Hope (Jung Hoseok), Jimin (Park Jimin), V (Kim Taehyung) It is Jungkook (Jeon Jungkook).

During an interview with the YouTube channel Ask Anything Chat, in 2021, the members commented on how they preferred to be called. Second Vhe likes it when his two names combine, with members suggesting nicknames like “Vhyung”, “Kim V“, or even “V Taehyung”.

Already Suga revealed that he doesn’t see much of a difference, and that members generally call him Suga or “Suga hyung” (Korean word used by men to refer to older men) — less Jungkookwho got into the habit of just calling him Yoongi.

Finally, Jin also revealed that members rarely address J-Hope by his real or artistic name, and who generally call him by his nicknames Hobi or Hobah – while Jungkookagain, says he has a specific and cute way to call him: “Hoseokie hyung.”

In 2023, during an interview with the newspaper El País, RMleader of BTS, explained that, nowadays, he prefers that people only know him by his stage name, to give him the opportunity to use his real name with more privacy.

“We all have a past, a dark story, as we say in Korea. Runch Randa was my nickname in an RPG, then I wanted to be, you know, a ‘rap monster’, then I matured…”, explained the idol. “I prefer my name to be known by as few people as possible. I’m not John Lennon or Paul McCartney. I can stay in a hotel comfortably and I like that.”
