Finland cut gas consumption to a record high without any problems

Gas consumption in Finland “imperceptibly” declined without significant delays in production and cold houses.

Finland in January-August of this year halved the consumption of natural gas. This is a record among EU countries, the country’s largest newspaper Helsingin sanomat reported on Wednesday, September 14.

“Finland was afraid that the stoppage of Russian gas supplies in May would cause problems, but so far they have been avoided. Seemingly imperceptibly, the use of natural gas in Finland has been cut in half since the beginning of the year, and as a result there was no significant interruption in production and cold houses “, – the publication wrote.

About 8.8 terawatt-hours of natural gas were consumed in Finland in eight months, while in the same period last year, the consumption was about twice – 17.8 terawatt-hours.

These figures do not include gas supplied to the LNG terminals in Pore and Tornio, which only serve the local industry.

It is emphasized that the reduction in consumption of around 50% is a European record.

“At the beginning of the year, gas consumption across the EU decreased by only 6% compared to last year, and in some countries consumption even increased slightly. The EU’s goal is to reduce gas consumption by 15 %,” the newspaper recalled.

According to local experts, one explanation for the successful decrease in consumption is that few houses in Finland have individual gas heating.

“The direct distribution of gas to consumers plays a small role here compared to the rest of Europe. It makes our situation easier compared to, for example, Germany,” said the Suomen Gas Association CEO.

Suppliers have also been able to replace natural gas with other fuels such as coal, biomass or peat. The change in fuel was driven by rising gas prices.

The rising cost of gas has also led to a change in the way real estate is heated. In Lahti this fall, large facilities with gas heating will be connected to the district heating network.

Before the energy crisis, about a third of Finland’s gas was used to generate electricity and heat, but this figure has now dropped to zero.

Recall that in the European Union the occupancy level of gas storage facilities reached 84%. This was announced by the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

Also, gas prices in Europe have recently stabilized at around $2,000 per thousand cubic meters.
