The Christmas food basket could be more expensive because of the border blockade

Ukraine imports bananas, citrus fruits, most seafood, and fish. Due to a strike on the Ukrainian-Polish border, the import of these products decreased.

If the Polish carriers’ strike does not end before December 10, the Christmas food basket will become more expensive. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Taras Vysotsky during the telethon.

“If the partners keep their promises, because there is an active discussion going on these past few days, for example until December 10, then the situation will be resolved, then even less,” he explained.

According to the official, if the strike lasts throughout December, the Christmas food basket will become more expensive.

“Vegetables from the borscht set, fortunately, almost completely cover domestic production. There are no price changes for them,” said Vysotsky.

The Deputy Minister also drew the fact that a number of products are cheaper today than the same period last year, in particular onions and carrots – by 60%, eggs – by 16%, butter – by 18%, buckwheat – by 60%. Accordingly, for the main products provided by domestic production, there is no food inflation this season.

Regarding imported goods, the official noted that there is no expected physical shortage. “But if the car travels with a week or with a thousand kilometers or two, it is logical that the logistics becomes more expensive,” he added.

Vysotsky recalled that Ukraine imports bananas, citrus fruits, most seafood, and fish. Accordingly, due to the strike on the Ukrainian-Polish border, imports of these products have slightly decreased. The consequences of blocking checkpoints may also affect, according to the official, the cost of animal feed, which Ukraine also imports.

We remind you that on November 6, Polish carriers began to block truck traffic near the three largest checkpoints on the Ukrainian border: Korczowa – Krakovets, Grebenne – Rawa-Russkaya, Dorogusk – Yagodin.

Among the main demands is the return of operating permits for Ukrainian carriers, which were removed by the agreement with the EU until June 30, 2024. The protesters want to end the agreement and continue the border crossing permit regime in January 1.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said his country would ask for the return of EU permits for Ukraine.
