The exact amount of fuel oil of Russian origin in the products purchased by the Pentagon could not be determined.

Russian oil goes through Turkey to an oil refinery in Greece. From there, the oil was sold to the Pentagon, despite international sanctions. The Washington Post reported this on November 14.

Petroleum products originating in Russia continued to flow to Motor Oil’s Hellas refinery on Greece’s Aegean coast.

The supply route passed through an oil storage facility in Turkey, which made it possible to hide the ownership of the oil in the Russian Federation. In fact, ownership of the product changed hands several times before it reached Greece.

The exact amount of fuel oil of Russian origin in the products purchased by the Pentagon could not be determined. These products are refined using many ingredients that cannot be traced during manufacture.

It was also not possible to determine if at any point during the journey the fuel oil from Russia was relabelled as having arrived from another country. Documents describing the origin of an oil shipment, known as certificates of origin, are not intended for public access.

The Pentagon has signed nearly a billion dollars in new Greek refinery contracts since the US ban took effect in March.

Since February, more than one million barrels of jet fuel from Motor Oil Hellas have also been shipped to government and corporate buyers in Italy, France, Spain and the UK, according to shipping reports.

The Pentagon’s Defense Logistics Agency said it was not aware that its Greek supplier was transporting fuel from Russia. He believes that his contractors, especially Motor Oil Hellas, are responsible for compliance with applicable laws and regulations related to business in Russia and Russian companies, and must confirm their compliance with such laws and regulations. this to purchase.

According to the sanctions rules, Turkish businesses are allowed to receive Russian fuel, while the Greek oil refinery is not subject to such permission.

It was previously reported that the US Treasury Department sent messages to ship management companies about 100 ships suspected of violating sanctions against Russian oil.

Let’s recall that Russia’s oil and gas revenues rose to 1.64 trillion rubles in October. This is 2.2 times higher than the previous month and is the highest monthly figure since April 2022.
