Mitch McConnell says he supports US House Speaker Mike Johnson’s stopgap budget proposal.
The Republican leader in the US Senate, Mitch McConnell, spoke in favor of adopting a temporary budget that does not include funding for aid to Ukraine. The Hill reported it.
As the senator said, he supports US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson’s proposal for a temporary budget. According to him, this is necessary to avoid a shutdown (stopping the work of the government) because the main budget was not adopted on time. This stopgap budget will allow annual spending bills to be completed within the next two months.
If Congress approves the stopgap budget, there won’t be another funding bill for Ukraine or Israel until January.
Mitch McConnell has previously said that halting aid to Ukraine is a major step backwards for the United States and its reputation as the leader of the free world.
Let’s remember that the House of Representatives of the US Congress approved the temporary funding for the government, to avoid the so-called shutdown. The White House tried to include a compromise of $6 billion for Ukraine in the draft budget until mid-November, but this initiative did not get enough votes.
As the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleg Nikolenko said, the adoption of the temporary budget of the United States, which has no new costs to support Ukraine, will not affect the previously agreed aid.
