Production at the Groningen gas field has been banned due to frequent man-made earthquakes.
In the Netherlands, gas production at Europe’s largest gas field, Groningen, was halted on October 1 due to seismological hazards. This was announced by NAM, the operator of the field, RTV Noord reports.
“At 06:00 in the morning of October 1, the gas tap in Groningen was turned off. After 60 years, gas production in the field ended,” the report said.
The reason for the field’s closure is often man-made earthquakes associated with its development.
“We are increasingly facing earthquakes. So the closure of the Groningen field is inevitable,” NAM said.
We are talking about the conservation of Groningen, and in the event of severe frosts, the field may be temporarily opened.
Last week, the field produced only 2 million cubic meters per day. m of gas. For comparison, during its heyday in the 1970s, the field produced 350 million cubic meters. m of gas per day. The final field closure is scheduled for October 1, 2024.
The field operator is NAM, a company created by Shell and Exxon Mobil.
We remind you that a new gas field was discovered in Ukraine, the reserves of which may reach 1 billion cubic meters.
