France, Germany and ten other states are asking the European Commission to explain the decision on food from Ukraine.
A number of member states of the European Union, including France and Germany, are concerned about the introduction of a temporary ban on the import of agricultural products from Ukraine to Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia . This was reported on May 12 by Politico.
Ministers from 12 countries expressed “serious concern” over the deal, which they said “undermines the integrity of the EU’s internal market,” according to a letter seen by the publication.
France, Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, Greece, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Luxembourg, Estonia, Denmark and Slovenia are demanding “urgent clarification” of the agreement, which they say the EC concluded “without consulting Member States”.
“We call on the Commission to return to a transparent procedure in accordance with established rules within the framework of the functioning of the EU and its member states,” the letter said.
It will be recalled that the European Commission has banned the import of wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds of Ukrainian origin to Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia for the period from May 2 to June 5, 2023.
In addition, the farmers of these countries were offered assistance in the amount of 100 million euros.
In the letter cited by Politico, the ministers requested further discussion of the situation and sought an explanation of how and why the funds were allocated to farmers.
