The data suggests that ongoing AI work may negatively affect the helpfulness of endoscopists during common methods without technological support.
Continued use of artificial intelligence during colonoscopy can lead to a reduction in the quality of the tests without its help. This conclusion was reached by Poland scientists following a multidisciplinary study conducted at four medical centers and published in the Medical Journal of The Lancet.
The study covers the period from September 2021 to March 2022. At these clinics, by the end of 2021, the AI system was introduced to identify polyps, after which colonoscopy was conducted both with its help and without it, depending on the date of the review.
Scientists compare the quality of the standard colonoscopes (without AI) three months before and after the introduction of technology. They reviewed the data of 1443 patients, of which 58.7% were women, and the median age was 61 years old.
The results were unexpected: the indicator of the detection of Adenom during standard procedures was reduced from 28.4% to 22.4% after AI doctors started working regularly, that is, the indicator fell 6%. Statistical analysis also showed that the patient’s gender (above in men), age over 60 years and the reality of previous AI use influences the indicator.
Scientists emphasize that these results do not discuss AI’s benefits to identify polyps, but emphasize the need for further training to maintain doctors’ skills.
