Russian missiles crossed Polish airspace on Tuesday, killing two people.
The mass rocket attack on Ukraine, carried out by Russia on November 15, may have global consequences for the whole world. According to Polish and American media, two rockets fell in the Polish village of Przewoduv near the Ukrainian border and hit grain dryers. Two more people were reported dead. Police representatives, prosecutors and troops arrived at the scene. The situation is developing rapidly, the Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki urgently called the Committee of the Council of Ministers on National Security and Defense. The Polish side has not yet officially confirmed that the incident is connected to Russia.
Two versions
A Polish Radio Zet correspondent reported that two rockets fell on the village of Przewoduv and killed two people. At the same time, Radio Lublin reports a different version. The incident in Przevodov took place around 3:40 pm at a reloading scale, where tractors arrived with loads. This information of the radio station was confirmed by the local police. According to preliminary findings, the tractor suddenly exploded as it passed the scale. The radio also reported the death of two people.
International reaction
US intelligence confirmed that Russian missiles crossed Polish airspace on Tuesday, killing two people, a senior US official told the AP on condition of anonymity.
Latvian Defense Minister Artis Pabriks said that Russian rockets, which were used in the attack on Ukraine on Tuesday, fell on Polish territory.
“My condolences to our Polish brothers in arms. The criminal Russian regime fired rockets targeting not only Ukrainian citizens, but also reached NATO territory in Poland. Latvia is in full solidarity to Polish friends and condemn this crime,” Pabriks wrote on Twitter.
The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed solidarity with Poland.
“The latest news from Poland is very concerning. We are closely consulting with Poland and other Alliance members. Estonia is ready to defend every inch of NATO territory. We are in full solidarity with our close ally Poland,” the Estonian Foreign Ministry wrote on Twitter.
What will be the answer?
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Russian missiles hit Poland.
“To fire missiles into NATO territory. This is a Russian missile attack on collective security. This is a very significant escalation. We must act,” the President insisted.
The Russian Defense Ministry said it had “nothing to do” with the alleged missile fall in Poland, which killed two people.
“The statements of the Polish media and officials about the alleged downing of “Russian” missiles in the area of the Przewoduv settlement are a deliberate provocation to escalate the situation,” the Russian Defense Ministry said.
They added that the Russian Federation has not carried out “any strikes” near the border of the state of Ukraine and Poland, and that the published footage of shells in Przewoduv “has nothing to do with Russian weapons.”
Following Poland, the Hungarian Prime Minister also convened a meeting of the Defense Council on Tuesday evening. The reason is the cessation of Russian oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline – according to preliminary data, this happened due to damage to the energy infrastructure facility after the Russian rocket attack on Ukraine.
According to the Hungarian media, a Russian missile hit a transformer substation of the power supply system on the Belarusian-Ukrainian border, which is responsible for the smooth operation of the Druzhba oil pipeline.
Hungarian state energy company MOL confirmed the cessation of oil pumping through Druzhba. They said they received a message from the Ukrainian side about the shelling of a transformer substation by Russian artillery.
“As a result of the strike, oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline to Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have been temporarily suspended,” MOL added.
