President of the United States Joe Bidenruled out imposing an indiscriminate entry ban on Russian citizens after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky demanded that his international allies cancel tourist visas.
Since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion on Feb. 24, US authorities have restricted the travel of nearly 5,000 people associated with the Kremlin’s orbit, but not tourists.
The representative of the US State Department argued for a distinction “between the actions of the Russian government and its policy in Ukraine and the population of Russia”, implying that Washington will not support Zelensky’s request.
“The United States does not want to close avenues of refuge and safety for Russian dissidents and others vulnerable to human rights violations,” a CNN spokesman said.
European Union High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell was also reluctant on Monday to ban Russians en masse from the EU (“we need to be more selective,” he said), after countries like Estonia and Finland. demanded additional measures from the bloc as a whole.
On August 9, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky addressed all countries of the international community with a request to ban Russian citizens from entering their territories.
The President emphasized in an interview with the American newspaper The Washington Post that “the most important sanctions that can be taken are to close the borders” for the Russians. “They have to live in their own world until they change their mentality,” he said.
“They say that this war has nothing to do with them and that the population is not responsible, but the population has chosen this government and is not fighting either against it or against the war,” the Ukrainian president said in that interview.
Ukraine: More than 9 thousand soldiers died in the war
About 9,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died in the six-month Russian invasion, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Valery Zaluzhny told Interfax on Monday.
“About 9,000 heroes died,” General Zaluzny said during the rally. He also added that Ukrainian children will require special attention, as their parents went to the front and “probably were among the thousands of dead soldiers.”
This is one of the few statements by Ukrainian officials about military casualties in this war launched by Russia on February 24th.
