In Vilnius, they said they did not intend to take responsibility for the implementation of the European Commission’s decision.
The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry said they accepted the European Commission’s position on transit to avoid division in transatlantic unity. At the same time, Vilnius noted that the country will not take responsibility for the implementation of this decision. This was announced at a press conference on Thursday, July 14, by Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte, LRT reports.
“We are grateful to the European Commission for consulting with the Lithuanian authorities, listening to our comments and suggestions, but we should not and cannot take responsibility for the decision,” Simonyte said.
He also pointed out that the EC clarifications were not directed at Lithuania, but at all EU countries.
Earlier, Simonyte said the transit of certain goods subject to sanctions, in accordance with EC rules, would require more control. The methods of such control have not yet been confirmed and established by Lithuanian institutions, but so far the same procedures implemented so far will be applied.
Recall that Lithuania blocked the transit of Russian goods by rail to the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation. In response, the Russian Federation threatened Lithuanian residents with “consequences.”
Later, the EU clarified that the sanctions implied a ban on the transport of sanctioned goods only by road. At the same time, rail transport is permitted subject to the necessary control.
