The number of German brigade personnel in Lithuania is gradually increasing and will reach 500 people by the end of the year.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said the country is increasing the number of its military personnel stationed in Lithuania. He said this during a visit to Vilnius on January 22, Delfi reports.
According to Pistorius, the deployment of the German brigade in Lithuania is continuous and according to plan. He noted that the first command staff and the brigade commander were already in Vilnius.
The head of the German Ministry of Defense said that the number of German troops in Lithuania is increasing along with the development of infrastructure for them, as stipulated in the action plan.
“The deployment of the brigade is going according to plan, it is consistent that we have personnel from the first headquarters in Vilnius, we have a commander,” he said.
Pistorius emphasized that preparations are now underway for the arrival of brigade units to be deployed in the Lithuanian cities of Nemencin and Rokantiškės. According to him, this will happen in the second quarter of 2025.
The minister also said that he will meet with the main command staff of the brigade and inspect the construction of military infrastructure in Rokantiškės. The service of the brigade’s soldiers will officially begin in the second quarter of 2025.
Pistorius added that by 2025, the command staff of the German brigade will be able to command and conduct exercises with NATO partners and allies. He noted that the purpose of his visit to Lithuania was to show that Germany is determined to ensure the security of NATO’s eastern flank.
Lithuania’s defense chief Dovile Shakaliene said in a meeting with Pistorius that the German brigade remains a top priority for all major political parties in Germany, so it should not be a concern for Lithuania in light of the upcoming election in February.
The country’s Ministry of Defense noted that the number of personnel of the German brigade in Lithuania is gradually increasing and will reach 500 people by the end of the year. Signal companies, headquarters and service companies, as well as medical and logistics units will soon arrive in Lithuania. They will be housed in temporary infrastructure facilities in Nemencin and Rokantiškės.
Earlier, the media wrote that the deployment of a permanent German brigade in Lithuania could cost about 11 billion euros.
