Blocking these cities increases the likelihood that the Ukrainian army will retreat, which will allow the invaders to occupy the city.
Russian troops intend to block Ukrainian land lines of communication in Pokrovsk and Mirnograd, Donetsk region. So, the enemy wants to force the Ukrainian Armed Forces to withdraw from the cities in the coming months. This was confirmed by a report from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
The Russians recently cut the T-0405 Pokrovsk-Konstantinovka highway east of Pokrovsk and the T-0406 Pokrovsk-Mezhovaya highway southwest of Pokrovsk.
ISW believes that a Russian offensive east and west of Pokrovsk could complicate Ukrainian logistics and Ukraine’s ability to resupply and redeploy troops to protect the populated areas of Pokrovsk and Mirnograd.
Analysts warn that Russian military commanders may conduct further offensives north of routes T-0405 and T-0406, ultimately forcing the Ukrainian Armed Forces to retreat north (rather than east or west) to support Russia’s siege of both population centers and beyond. advancing west towards the administrative border of the Donetsk and Dnepropetrovsk regions.
The military command of the Russian Federation hopes to avoid conducting frontal attacks on the cities of Pokrovsk and Mirnograd with infantry, ISW suggests.
The blockade of these cities increases the possibility of the retreat of the Ukrainian army, and the Russian troops, for their part, will be able to capture these settlements, avoiding heavy urban fighting.
As already reported, Russian troops are trying to bypass Pokrovsk and Mirnograd from the south, and there are battles in the suburbs.
Let’s add that, according to the General Staff, the situation at the front remains difficult. The enemy, using its advantage in manpower and equipment, continued to attack the Ukrainian positions.
