Residents of Russian-occupied Transnistria may also be left without electricity.
The First Pridnestrovsky TV channel reports that coal reserves at the Pridnestrovskaya State District Power Plant will last for about 50 days.
Until recently, the state district power plant operated on Russian gas; the transition to coal was associated with a stop in transit through Ukraine.
Let us remind you that since January 1, 2025, Russian-occupied Transnistria has been left without gas and hot water after transit through Ukraine was stopped.
Russia refused to supply gas to Transnistria via other routes. Tiraspoloblenergo stated that they left heating and hot water supply only in medical institutions and social welfare institutions with inpatient stays for citizens.
Gas will be supplied to multi-storey buildings only for cooking.
Local residents are encouraged to dress warmly, insulate their homes and use electric heaters.
Russia uses energy as a political weapon, but Moldova has already diversified its sources of gas supplies and is ready to cope with any situation arising as a result of the Kremlin’s decision – this is how Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean condemned Gazprom’s decision to stop gas supplies to the country and rejected his reproaches due to debt. This decision once again confirms the Kremlin’s intention to leave residents of the Transnistrian region without light and heat in the middle of winter, Recan noted.
Gazprom believes that Moldova must pay the debt for past natural gas supplies. According to the calculations of the Russian monopolist, this debt amounts to $709 million.
At the same time, an international audit, the results of which the Moldovan government refers to, estimated this debt at $8.6 million.
Currently, Moldova is considering the available legal options, in particular, the possibility of turning to international arbitration to resolve this issue, Recean said.
