About 11.5 million migrants have some form of legal residency in the United States, and another 4.8 million do not have legal residency or proper documentation.
Mexico is testing a mobile app that will allow migrants to alert relatives and local consulates if they think they are about to be detained by US immigration officials, CNN writes on Saturday, December 28.
The program will allow users to send notifications to selected relatives and the nearest Mexican consulate, according to Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente.
“If you find yourself in a situation where detention is unavoidable, you press the alarm button and the phone will send a signal to the nearest consulate,” explained the minister.
De la Fuente expects the app to be fully operational by January.
“This step is a response to newly elected President Donald Trump’s threats to carry out mass deportations after he takes office on January 20,” the minister explained.
Mexico also said it has increased consular support and legal aid for migrants in the event of deportation proceedings. In addition, the country’s authorities have created a 24-hour call center to answer questions from migrants.
Newly elected US President Donald Trump has vowed to launch “the largest deportation operation in American history” on his first day in office.
