The contract between Ukraine and Russia for the supply of gas through pipelines expires at the beginning of 2025. Ukraine has said that they do not intend to renew the contract.
On January 1, 2025, the agreement between Ukraine and Russia on gas transit will expire. Ukraine will not pursue this, but it is ready to deliver gas from any other country through its gas transportation system. The Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denis Shmygal, said this on Monday, December 16, after a conversation with his Slovak counterpart, Robert Fico.
At the same time, the head of the Cabinet of Ministers emphasized that Ukraine is ready to fulfill the obligations assumed by it under the Association Agreement with the EU.
“If the European Commission has officially contacted Ukraine about the transit of any gas other than Russian, of course, we will discuss it and we are ready to implement the relevant agreements based on the principles of energy security, both for the entire EU and for each European nation,” Shmygal said.
He also noted that European energy security remains a priority for Ukraine, especially in winter conditions. In addition, Shmygal noted the importance of continued sanctions pressure on Russia’s energy sector.
“The adopted 15th EU sanctions package tightens sanctions in particular against the shadow tanker fleet, which brings significant funds to Russia to continue Sanction pressure against the Russian energy sector, it is one of the main elements of pressure on Russia is the real world,” he added.
Let’s recall that Bulgaria has already warned that it may stop the transfer of Russian gas to Central Europe if Gazprom cannot find a payment solution.
Hungary said it had “found a way” to resume gas shipments from Russia
