See which musicals will gain new seasons or arrive in Brazil for the first time next year
Do you know where acting, music and dance come together with a single goal? In musical theater! It is through musical pieces that these worlds converge in order to tell a story on stage, some of the most famous being “Cats”, “Les Misérables”, “The Lion King” and “Wicked”.
“Wicked”, in fact, was adapted in theaters, the first of which premiered on November 21, 2024, and since then, it has already grossed more than R$520 million around the world, thus becoming the second highest-grossing film of all time. a theater adaptation already released, second only to “Mamma Mia!” (2008), which had US$611 million in global revenue.
As a result of the success of the film version of the Broadway musical released in 2003, there is a great demonstration of public interest in watching musicals — something that will not be difficult, given that the year 2025 promises to put major titles on display; discover 5 of them below:
1. Wicked
With approval from the public and specialized critics about the film, a request arose: bring “Wicked” back to the stage! The requests were met and the play will be performed in Brazil for the third time with Myra Ruiz and Fabi Bang in the roles of Glinda and Elphaba, the witches who would become known as the Good Witch of the South and the Wicked Witch of the West in “The Wizard of Oz.”
The new season starts on March 20th next year at Teatro Renault, in São Paulo.
2. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Expecting full audiences, confirmation of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” was made this Monday, the 16th! There is no confirmation of the premiere date yet, but registration for auditions is now open, according to the teaser revealed; watch!
The play, written by Jack Thorne and performed for the first time in 2016, it is set after the events seen in the Harry Potter saga, following a new generation of wizards and the unexpected friendship of Albus Potter, Harry’s son, and Scorpius Malfoy, Draco Malfoy’s son.
This is the musical’s first time in Latin America, and fans can expect a great show, as the title has accumulated several awards, in addition to the record for the highest weekly box office of all time for a play on Broadway.
3. Mean Girls
Also receiving an adaptation on the big screen this year, the musical “Meninas Malvadas” will debut in Brazil on March 13th next year at the Santander theater, in São Paulo.
In the cast, the singer, actress and voice actress Laura Castro will be responsible for giving life to Cady Cameron, the great protagonist of the story that emerged as a film in 2004 and turned into a play in 2017 by the same screenwriter as the feature film: Tina Fey.
4. tick, tick… BOOM!
In 2001, Jonathan Larson put “tick, tick… BOOM!” on stages. The play, which follows the loves, friendships and despair of an aspiring composer called Jon, will have a new season in Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro, with no set date yet. The actors Matheus Boa, Camille Dutra and Pedro Balu will be Jon, Susan and Michael in the musical.
It is worth remembering that the title also has a film adaptation. Directed by Lin-Manuel Mirandathe plot premiered in 2021 on Netflix bringing Andrew Garfield in the lead role.
5. Sweeney Todd
Inspired by the book Hugh Wheeler“Sweeney Todd” appeared in 1979 and will have a new season in Brazil, held at Teatro Santander, starting on January 9th.
Saulo Vasconcelos, Andrezza Massei, Matthew Ribeiro and Rodrigo Mercadante Sweeney Todd, Dona Lovett, Tobias Ragg and Judge Turpin were chosen to play, respectively.
