Today, Olaf Scholz will send a letter to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier with a proposal to dissolve the parliament.
The German Bundestag has announced a vote of no confidence in the government of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. It was found out on Monday, December 16.
According to the results of the roll-call vote, 394 representatives voted no confidence, 207 voted against, and another 116 abstained. At the same time, at least 367 votes are required to express confidence in the chancellor.
The vote of no confidence was supported by the largest opposition faction – the conservative bloc of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU), as well as the Free Democratic Party (FDP), which left the ruling coalition.
Representatives from the Left Party, the populist Sarah Wagenknecht Union (SSV) and the Alternative for Germany also voted no confidence in Scholz.
The head of government was supported by 207 representatives, mostly Social Democrats, and mostly members of the Alliance 90/Greens abstained.
It is expected that today Olaf Scholz will send a letter to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier with a proposal to dissolve the parliament.
As you know, at the beginning of November in Germany, the government collegium consisting of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Free Democratic Party (VDP) and Union 90/Greens collapsed.
Early elections to the Bundestag are expected to take place on February 23, 2025.
