The needs of Bundeswehr personnel, according to the German Ministry of Defense, are greater than imagined, since the defense plans of the North Atlantic Alliance approved in 2023.
The Bundeswehr will need 35,000 additional soldiers to meet NATO’s new defense requirements. Markus Faber, chairman of the defense committee of the German parliament, said this on Saturday, October 12, writes RND.
He noted that five to six more combat brigades of ground forces should be created in addition to the planned ten, which should appear by 2031.
“Assuming that the number of combat brigades in the Alliance increases from 82 to 131 and that Germany participates proportionally, the Army will need five divisions instead of the current three divisions out of 65,000 soldiers,” said Faber .
So, in his opinion, the number of all divisions is about 100 thousand Bundeswehr soldiers – 35 thousand more than currently assumed.
The politician added that defense spending in Germany should also increase from 2% of annual economic output to 3%.
In Germany, they do not rule out that war may break out in Europe in the next five years, and therefore they are increasing military training.
We wrote that the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance implemented their plans to prepare for the rapid deployment of hundreds of thousands of troops in a short period of time.
