In the Nikolaev region, dangerous elements were discovered in demined areas that were damaged as a result of shelling and occupation.
The press service of the Ministry of Defense reported this today, September 23.
Specialists from the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine examined the contamination of soils in three already demined areas of the Nikolaev region – from the outskirts of the city of Snigirevka and the area of the village of Kiselevka in the Pervomayskaya village community, which received significant damage as a result of shelling and occupation, the department notes.
In places with the most damaged genetic layers of the soil, samples were taken and an express analysis for the presence of heavy metals was carried out using the X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy method and the ProSpektor-3 device.
In the samples, military ecologists found:
- strontium;
- zirconium;
- iron;
- potassium;
- calcium;
- titanium;
- magnesium;
- barium and other chemical elements.
A more detailed analysis of the selected soil samples will be conducted in the stationary conditions of the laboratory of the Center for Excellence in Mine Action and Environmental Safety using the relevant methods. The studies are conducted in accordance with the decision of the National Authority for Mine Action, approved by the Prime Minister of Ukraine.
Based on the results obtained, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine will develop recommendations for the further use of demined lands in the country’s agro-industrial complex. We must ensure the safe return of these territories to economic circulation, – noted the head of the Main Directorate for Mine Action, Civil Defense and Environmental Safety, Colonel Ruslan Beregulya.
