Latvia, against the backdrop of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, continued conscription for compulsory military service in 2023. Women can perform military service voluntarily.
Latvia is considering the possibility of introducing a conscription service for women. Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds announced this on Wednesday, August 28, Delfi reports.
Such changes are not immediate and are planned to be implemented before 2028, Sprouds said.
“Of course, it won’t happen today or tomorrow. However, before that, you have to do your homework,” he said.
The Latvian Minister of Defense also emphasized that ongoing public discussions should take place in the country.
“It’s not just a matter of the coalition, it’s a matter of the political parties, the parliament and the whole society,” added Sprudes.
The minister noted that the country must carry out preparatory work to ensure the quality of the national defense and meet the needs of the reserve soldiers. He also added that there is a need to prepare suitable equipment, particularly uniforms for women, weapons and equipment.
Units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs received 1,170 women’s body armor from the Global Fund for Security Sector Reform.
