Following Viktor Orban’s “peace tour”, the European Commission has cancelled its traditional visit to Hungary, which holds the presidency of the EU Council.

In addition, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen decided that European Commissioners will not participate in informal meetings organized by the Hungarian Presidency.
The European Commission has asked its commissioners not to attend informal ministerial meetings during Hungary’s EU Council Presidency, three EU officials told POLITICO.
By sending civil servants to the meetings, the Commission hopes to send a message to Budapest that its cavalier use of the EU presidency is unacceptable, one official added.
Shortly after Hungary took over the EU Council presidency, Orban traveled to Russia and China. He also attended a summit in Azerbaijan, where the unrecognized Northern Cyprus is an observer. The EU criticized the trips.
The bloc’s foreign ministers are also set to snub Hungary by holding their own foreign affairs summit in August instead of travelling to Orban’s west in Budapest.
In addition, Orban has submitted written proposals for ending the war in Ukraine after his “peace tour,” his political adviser Balázs Orban said in an interview with Magyar Nemzet.
According to him, after trips to Kyiv and Moscow, “it became clear that Ukraine and Russia are very determined to fight, and without the intervention of external mediators, we will, unfortunately, see very brutal destruction in the coming months.”
Orban is also convinced that Hungary is now the only one that can “negotiate with all parties.”
