MEPs called on EU members to limit relations with Vladimir Putin to a narrow range of issues.
EU member states and the international community should not recognize the results of the March 15-17 election in Russia, which declared Vladimir Putin the winner. The European Parliament adopted the corresponding resolution on Thursday, April 25.
The document was supported by 493 MEPs, only 11 were against it, and another 18 abstained.
It was noted that the Russians held elections in the occupied territories of Ukraine. And within Russia itself, the “election” process is neither free nor fair.
“This ridiculous performance by the Russian authorities pursued the only goal – to create the appearance of the electoral legitimacy of Vladimir Putin, his policy of ruthless internal repression and, above all, an aggressive war against in Ukraine,” the resolution said.
The European Parliament expressed regret that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban decided to distance himself from the EU position and congratulated Vladimir Putin on his fictional “re-election.”
The MPs urged EU members to limit relations with Putin to issues important to peace in the region, as well as humanitarian and human rights objectives, such as prisoner exchanges, the return of children deported from in Ukraine or calls for the release of political prisoners.
Previously, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) did not recognize the legitimacy of Vladimir Putin as President of the Russian Federation. This is stated in resolution 2540, dedicated to the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
