About 780 million people worldwide are hungry in 2022, and a third of the world’s population faces food insecurity.
In 2022, people will throw away 1.05 billion tons of food – that’s 19% of all available food. Food waste accounts for 8-10% of greenhouse gas emissions. This is stated in a report published on the website of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
It found that by 2022, households wasted more than 1 billion meals per day, while 783 million people suffered from hunger and a third of the world’s population faced food insecurity.
The world will produce 1.05 billion tonnes of food waste in 2022, which amounts to 132 kg per capita or almost a fifth of all food available to consumers. 60% of food waste comes from households, 28% from catering establishments, and another 12% from retail.
“Food waste is a global tragedy. Today, millions of people go hungry while food is simply thrown away. Such waste causes great damage to the climate and nature,” said UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen.
Food waste is responsible for 8-10% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions. The cost to the global economy from food loss and waste is estimated at around $1 trillion.
Let’s remember that the UN previously warned that in the 18 “hot spots” of the world, the threat of famine will soon increase due to the conflict taking place there.
