Ecuador changed its mind about arms transfers to Ukraine

After Russia suspended the importation of Ecuadorian bananas, allegedly because of a pest, Ecuador said it was in favor of a “peaceful resolution of disputes.”

Ecuador changed its mind about sending any military material to Ukraine. This is what the country’s Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld said, reports El Universo.

“There is a clear directive from the President of the Republic of Ecuador that the country will not send any military material to a country that is having an international armed conflict,” said Sommerfeld.

The head of the Foreign Ministry added that Ecuador is a member of the United Nations Security Council and, as a member of this organization, contributes to the resolution of conflicts, respect for international law and the “peaceful resolution of disputes.”

Earlier, Ecuador said they were discussing the possibility of transferring old Soviet weapons to the United States, which Washington could provide to Ukraine. In return, the State promised to transfer Sikorsky UH-604/L Black Hawk helicopters to Ecuador.

However, Russia protested against Ecuador’s intentions and suspended the certification of bananas from five Ecuadorian companies because of a “dangerous quarantine pest.”
