The country’s Foreign Ministry announced this on February 19.
Earlier it was reported about Ecuador’s plans to transfer old Russian helicopters, MLRS and air defense systems from the 90s to Ukraine through the United States. At the same time, the country wanted to receive American UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.
Plans to “exchange” equipment were officially announced by the President of Ecuador. Moscow then announced that it would stop the export of bananas from Ecuador. Already on February 17, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov held a meeting with Ecuadorian leader Daniel Noboa, after which Russia decided not to introduce a ban on the import of bananas.
Russian authorities have allowed the supply of bananas from Ecuador. They were stopped due to Quito’s intentions to transfer US military equipment to Ukraine. Rosselkhoznadzor gave the right to five Ecuadorian companies to export bananas to Russia.
Russia suspended the export of Ecuadorian bananas in early February. According to the official version, the decision was made because of a special type of fly that supposedly poses a danger to humans.
Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld, as reported by the Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo, spoke of “the instruction of the President of Ecuador not to supply military equipment to a country in a state of armed conflict.”
Ecuador is part of the UN Security Council. As a member, we promote conflict resolution, always respecting international law and the peaceful resolution of conflicts,” Sommerfeld explained.
