The solution depends on cooperation with NATO members, as Gripen parts are also produced in many other countries.
The decision to transfer Swedish Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine depends on whether the country becomes a NATO ally. Swedish Defense Minister Paul Johnson said this in an interview with Channel 24.
“We are able to make a decision (on the transfer of fighters – ed.), but everything depends on whether we will become an ally of NATO, because then we will be subject to Article 5, as well as the principles of joint defense of NATO. planning,” he said.
In the future, Sweden will be able to consider this issue, but this, among other things, depends on cooperation with other NATO countries, since parts of the Gripen system are also produced in many others other countries.
Johnson recalled that Sweden was a member of the Fighter Coalition.
“At the same time, it is important that Ukraine has a strong Air Force and it has fourth-generation fighters. Therefore, we are considering the question of what we can do, for example, in matters of financing, when it comes to the coalition fighters, what we can do about training, as well as other issues,” said the minister.
The Swedish JAS 39 Gripen multirole fighter from Saab is considered by the Ukrainian Air Force as the second type of aircraft after the American F-16.
Let’s remember that earlier the Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Armed Forces, General Mikael Büden, said that he was waiting for political decisions on the Gripen.
