On Wednesday, February 7, people’s deputies corrected the standard for storing military biomaterial.
The Verkhovna Rada adopted Law No. 10448 “On the Preservation of the Gene Fund of the Ukrainian People,” which allows for the preservation and use of reproductive cells of deceased Ukrainian military personnel for the birth of children. The press service of the parliament reported this on Telegram.
The law stipulates that military personnel whose reproductive cells are stored in cryobanks must fill out a will, the form of which will be approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. If they die, the reproductive cells will be preserved at state expense for three years. After this period, further storage can be extended at the expense of the person specified in the will.
Let us remind you that on January 26, the Internet began to criticize the law prohibiting the use of reproductive cells of dead military personnel and obliging clinics to dispose of them starting in March. President Vladimir Zelensky signed this law at the end of November 2023.
Later, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine stated that cryobanks would not dispose of frozen biomaterial of dead military personnel. They called the ban on the use of sperm from military personnel after their death “a legislative conflict that will be eliminated as soon as possible.”
