In the United States of America, in the state of Alabama, a previously announced implementation using nitrogen was carried out for the first time.
The European Union has condemned the United States for using the death penalty with nitrogen gas on a man convicted of murdering a woman. This was stated in a statement by a representative of the European Union on Friday, January 26.
“The European Union deeply regrets the execution of Kenneth Eugene Smith in Alabama,” the statement said.
The document states that the EU “strongly opposes the death penalty at all times and in all circumstances, as it is a violation of the right to life and a complete denial of human dignity.”
The European Union has also stated that the death penalty is not a deterrent to crime, and that the maximum penalty makes judicial errors irreversible. In particular, the EU recalled that earlier in the United States, 196 innocent people were released from death row.
In this regard, the European Union once again called for a complete ban on the death penalty.
“We call on those states that continue to use the death penalty to introduce a moratorium and move towards a complete ban in line with the international trend,” the EU spokesperson stressed.
In the United States, a prisoner was executed with nitrogen gas. The man’s name is Kenneth Eugene Smith, and he was found guilty of murdering a woman in 1988. For a long time he tried to challenge the verdict, but all three appeals were rejected.
Former convict Kenneth Smith survived lethal injection.
