The German federal prosecutor’s office has accused a former Bundeswehr reserve officer of passing secret data to the Russian intelligence service. This was announced by the German Attorney General in Karlsruhe on Friday, April 1st.
It is indicated in relation to the accused Ralph G. there is “sufficient suspicion of employment for a foreign special service”, which was carried out against the interests of Germany and one of the NATO states.
Beginning in October 2014, Mr. contacted various individuals associated with the Russian intelligence service and provided them with documents and data from public and non-public sources until March 2020. The reserve officer had access on this information relating to his service in the Bundeswehr, where he was deputy commander of the district communications department. In addition, he was a member of several economics committees.
According to the prosecution, Mr. Moscow provided information about Bundeswehr reservists, military-civil cooperation, civil defense, as well as about the German economy, especially about the consequences for Germany of the European sanctions imposed in 2014 against the Russian Federation and regarding the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.
In addition, he apparently provided Russian intelligence with “personal data of high -ranking Bundeswehr representatives and businesses,” as well as information about the defense policy of the United States and its Western allies.
For this, he received invitations to official events of the state bodies of Russia, it is indicated below. The espionage case was brought on March 16 to the State Security Senate of the Higher Regional Court in Düsseldorf.
It is not specified in the statement which particular Russian service is being referred to.
Earlier in Germany, a Russian named Ilnur N. was arrested and later charged with espionage. He relayed information about the European Ariane space launch vehicle to Russian intelligence administrators.
The German government also decided to expel a Russian diplomat from the country on suspicion of espionage.
