The Senate failed to agree on funding for Ukraine before the New Year.

Negotiations are likely to be postponed in January. Senators reported this to Voice of America.

U.S. Senate leaders said a deal to provide more aid to Ukraine and bolster U.S. border security likely won’t be reached anytime soon.

On Tuesday, December 19, respected Democratic Senator Dick Durbin said that such an agreement by the New Year is still unlikely.

I hope they’ll put together a bill, roll up their sleeves, sit down and finish it when we come back in January,” Sen. Durbin told reporters.

Starting next year, U.S. lawmakers may find it even more difficult to reach agreement on conflicting bills, observers say, because it will be the period when U.S. politicians begin running for president.

Reuters writes that an agreement on Ukraine and the US border is unlikely to be concluded in the near future. It will likely be delayed until January, one senior Democrat said.

There are still ongoing discussions on the agreement, which includes Ukraine, Israel and US border security. Republican Minority Leader McConnell said those involved in the process are “making slow and steady progress,” he was quoted as saying by the agency. However, they need more time.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon announced that funds for military assistance to Ukraine will run out on December 30, Bloomberg writes. The US Department of Defense is spending its last $1.07 billion. for the purchase of new weapons and equipment that will replace those removed from service and sent to Ukraine.

Once these funds are used, the Department will exhaust the funding available to us to provide security assistance to Ukraine,” Pentagon Comptroller Michael McCord wrote in a letter to the heads of the House and Senate Defense Policy and Appropriations Committees.

So he is trying to increase pressure on Congress to break the deadlock on allocating more than 60 billion for Ukraine.
