An unstable situation in the American Automobile market has forced VW to change the approach – the cupra still has the ambition to get into the US market, but not earlier than a new decade.
The Volkswagen Group has decided to postpone the launch of the Cupra brand in the United States until after 2030, Motor1 reports. Although last year the company announced plans to bring the Spanish brand to the American market until the end of the decade, the strategy has now changed: the official statement refers to “ongoing challenges in the automotic industry” and “market changes.”
Although specific factors are not named, experts suggest that we talk about the uncertainty in the United States domestic policy, possible duties, changing -new demands for electric vehicles and general economic disturbance. The preliminary plan provided for the launch of an electric cupra forentor, a larger electric SUV, as well as hybrids and fuel models.
Cupra also intended to open 20 branded showrooms with Penske’s partner, dedicated to the eastern and west coast of the United States, as well as in the southern states. In addition, the company has prepared a separate line of models specifically for the American market, with local production, increased dimensions and designs adapted to local preferences. The goal is to sell at the level of 100 thousand cars annually -in a medium term.
However, the cupra emphasizes: it’s not a denial, but just a move. “We do not stop, but we have only removed the launch in the United States and we will continue to monitor market development in the coming years to determine the best time and strategy consistent with the brand’s long-term approach,” said Sven Shuvirt, vice president of sales, marketing chairs.
Despite changing plans in the United States, Cupra shows strong results in Europe. In the first half of 2025, the brand sells 167,600 cars, which is 33.4% more than the same period last year.
We reminded, earlier it was reported that Volkswagen had preceded Tesla in the European electric car market.
