Fourteen countries voted against the resolution, including the United States, Israel, Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Fiji, Guatemala, Hungary, Israel, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and Tonga. The resolution was supported by 120 states, including Russia, Iran, Lebanon and France.
45 countries abstained, including Ukraine, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, and Georgia.
The resolution, written by Jordan on behalf of the Arab group, makes no direct mention of Hamas or “hostage-taking.” At the same time, it calls for an “immediate and lasting ceasefire” and also calls for immediate humanitarian assistance, including the restoration of water and electricity supplies.
According to the German publication Bild, Berlin’s position was previously agreed upon by the head of the German Foreign Ministry, Annalena Bärbock, and Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Perhaps, in this way, Baerbock wants to send a signal to Arab countries that Berlin sees the suffering of Palestinian civilians. In addition, the author of the resolution was Jordan, a traditional ally of Germany in the region. In German government circles they want to ensure that part of the world community does not break away from Berlin and that reliable channels for dialogue in the Arab world are preserved, says Bild.
Thus, Germany did not support Israel during the vote at the UN General Assembly in order to maintain channels of dialogue with the Arab world.
Let us recall that the ex-consul of Ukraine in Israel Dmitry Chekalkin, in an interview for the Voice of America, pointed out that in order to seek peace in the Middle East, authoritative legitimate leaders are needed, but they are lacking on both sides. According to the former diplomat, the Palestinian group Hamas owes the active popularization of its activities to the Israeli authorities. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did everything to protect his own freedom and security, and this led to the sacrifice of the security of Israel itself. At the same time, Hamas is in complete control of the situation in the Gaza Strip and suppresses any movements that might challenge it.
