This year will be the third year in a row that Ukraine, due to the full-scale invasion of Russia, will not be able to conduct a full-fledged external independent assessment for admission to bachelor’s programs.
A likely model for administering a computer-based online test would be for a participant to complete four subject tests in one day: two subject tests each one hour before the break and two subject tests each one hour after the break.
This can really be difficult. But there is no better option in the current difficult security environment. After all, only this provides for a one-time arrival at the testing point. And this, in particular, is very important for those who will be forced to travel to some other locality to participate in NMT. Security and equal conditions are our priority,” said Mikhail Vinnitsky, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine.
As last year, two NMT sessions are planned: main and additional. Applicants who, for good reasons, were not tested during the main session will be able to take part in the additional testing session.
Testing will take place in specially equipped computer classrooms of educational institutions – temporary examination centers (TECs) created in populated areas both in Ukraine and abroad.
As Sergei Babak, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on Education, Science and Innovation, told Ukrinform, the corresponding bill on NMT in 2024 is now at the stage of registration in the Verkhovna Rada.
Entrance tests for bachelor’s programs in higher education in Ukraine will be conducted in the format of a national multi-subject test (NMT) on a computer basis. The Ministry of Education and the Educational Committee of the Council believe that in war conditions, NMT is the best option for conducting entrance exams to ensure equal conditions for all applicants, regardless of their place of stay.
As part of the NMT, each participant will complete tasks in four academic subjects, three of which are compulsory (Ukrainian language, mathematics and history of Ukraine), and one of which is optional from the list (Ukrainian literature, foreign language (English, German, French, Spanish), biology, chemistry, physics, geography). The applicant will mark the subject of his choice when registering to participate in NMT.
An innovation for 2024 is the expansion of the list of compulsory NMT subjects on the history of Ukraine. This is, of course, an important state step, because a deep understanding of the history of one’s people, based on the ability to critically analyze historical events, establish cause-and-effect relationships and identify trends and patterns, is the key to resistance to historical manipulation and fakes, the basis for the formation of a national identity and self-identification .
We want the test participants to be better informed about the history of Ukraine, to know what the prerequisites for this terrible war are, and how it happened that we are now at this point in relations with Russia. However, we will not include the entire historical period in the testing program. At NMT, knowledge will be tested only for the period from the 16th century to the present day,” commented Tatyana Vakulenko, director of the Ukrainian Center for Assessment of the Quality of Education.
