Lack of access to clean drinking water can lead to the spread of diseases and endanger people’s health.
The United Nations believes that the explosion of a dam on the Dnieper River in Ukraine could cause another increase in the cost of food in the world, as well as provoke drinking water problems for hundreds of thousands of people. About this on Tuesday, June 13, Reuters wrote.
“This whole area, which goes down to the Black Sea and Crimea, is the breadbasket not only for Ukraine, but for the whole world,” said UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths.
According to him, up to 700 thousand people may face the problem of lack of water, and the lack of access to it may lead to the spread of diseases, which will have a negative impact on the health of children in the first place.
“It is almost inevitable that we will see major problems with the harvesting and sowing of the next crop. And because what we are seeing is a major impact on global food security,” he added.
Griffiths also noted that blowing up the dam is a violation of international humanitarian law, including provisions of the Geneva Convention.
“It’s obvious. Whoever did this violated the Geneva Convention,” Griffiths insisted.
The United Nations is already sending humanitarian aid to the right bank of the Dnieper, which has flooded the Kherson region. A mission was also formed for the occupied left bank, awaiting security guarantees from Russia.
