Under pressure from the Union of Ukrainians in Victoria, the Association of Ukrainians in Victoria and Ukrainian Melbourne, the city of Melbourne severed sister city ties with St. Petersburg.
The Union of Ukrainian Organizations in Australia achieved the abolition of sister city status between the Australian city of Melbourne and St. Petersburg of Russia. This was reported by the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organizations.
“Under pressure from the Union of Ukrainians in Victoria, the Association of Ukrainians in Victoria and Ukrainian Melbourne, the city of Melbourne severed sister city ties with St. Petersburg as a sign of its outrage at the illegal and immoral invasion of Russia in Ukraine,” the statement read.
It was reported that on the eve of the corresponding meeting of the city council there was a demonstration called “Melbourne from Ukraine, not from St. Petersburg.”
During the event, Ukrainian World Congress (UCU) First Vice President Stefan Romaniv said Melbourne must send a strong signal to Russia that its brutal and genocidal war against Ukraine is unacceptable.
He also suggested that the city could support Ukraine by considering twinning with Odessa.
The World Congress of Ukrainians thanked Stefan Romanov and everyone who took part in this important and symbolic work.
It was previously reported that Ukraine received generators worth 1.95 million euros from Australia.
