The Permanent Representative of Ukraine at a meeting of the UN Security Council expressed the need for complete demilitarization and de-occupation of the station.
The principles of ensuring nuclear safety at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, acquired by the Russian military, should provide for its complete demilitarization and de-occupation. This was said by the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Serhiy Kyslitsa at a meeting of the UN Security Council.
Kislitsa emphasized that the Russian Federation continues to actively use the ZNPP for its military purposes, deploying around 500 soldiers and 50 pieces of heavy weapons to the station. According to him, in the turbine halls 1, 2 and 4 of the station’s power units are not only Russian military equipment, but also ammunition and explosives.
In his speech to the UN Security Council, the diplomat said that Ukraine considers the five principles of ZNPP nuclear safety developed by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
“However, these principles must be supplemented by the requirement for the complete demilitarization and de-occupation of the station,” the permanent representative emphasized.
According to Kislitsa, these include:
-
withdrawal of Russian troops and personnel illegally residing in ZNPP,
-
guarantees of uninterrupted power supply to the station from the territory controlled by the Ukrainian government;
-
a humanitarian corridor to ensure the rotation of managerial, operational and maintenance personnel of the ZNPP to keep it in a safe condition.
Kyslitsa added that Ukraine insists on including these elements in a new resolution of the IAEA Board of Directors, if the document is proposed for adoption at the next session.
It will be remembered that a week ago, the head of the International Nuclear Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, discussed with the head of Rosatom Alexei Likhachev the security issue at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant occupied by Russia.
