As a result of heavy rains from Monday night, in the region of Emilia-Romagna, the banks of the river burst. Thousands of people were evacuated.
In the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy, at least 24 communities and highways were flooded after rain for a second day. Eight people are known to have died, La Repubblica reported on May 17.
As the Minister of Civil Protection Nello Muzumechi said, all the rivers in the region overflowed their banks.
“On average, about 200 mm fell in 36 hours, and in some places – 500 mm. If we consider the fact that 1,000 mm of rain fell in this area in a year, we will understand what the force of the elements is,” he said.
Muzumechi added that 50,000 people were left without electricity.
According to the latest data, at least eight people have died, four are still missing.
Residents of various cities were forced to climb onto the roofs of houses, waiting for rescuers. Educational institutions are closed in the region, train traffic is suspended.
The Department of Civil Protection has declared the highest (red) level of weather danger. The Italian government has declared a state of emergency in the Emilia-Romagna region.

It will be recalled that in March in some provinces of Turkey that were affected by the earthquake, the downpour caused severe flooding.
