According to Politico, citing four sources, after the information about the data leak appeared, officials from the State Department, the Pentagon and American intelligence contacted their foreign counterparts.
One source said that members of the Five Eyes, an intelligence alliance between the United States, Canada, Britain, Australia and New Zealand, had approached Washington for briefings. The requests were sent separately to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the CIA and the FBI.
Meanwhile, officials in London, Brussels, Berlin, Dubai and Kyiv asked Washington who was responsible for the leak and what the US was doing to ensure that the information was removed from social networks. By the morning of April 10, US officials told allies that the White House was conducting an investigation to understand the full scope of the leak.
This case showed that the Ukrainians were absolutely right about this. The Americans now owe the Ukrainians. They should apologize and make amends,” said one European official.
The story has led to a crisis in U.S. relations with its allies, raising questions about how Washington will fix what officials around the world see as one of the biggest public U.S. intelligence failures since WikiLeaks released millions of sensitive documents from 2006 to 2021, the publication notes.
The method of leakage and the contents are very unusual. I can’t remember a time when there was such a leak and such a wide range of reliable information that was simply presented on social networks, and not like the Snowden files, which were first analyzed by a group of journalists, said a former US intelligence analyst who dealt with Russia.
Politico points out that in Ukraine, this leak was perceived as a shame and a potential long-term problem for the military command.
Recall that last week The New York Times reported that the Pentagon was investigating a leak of classified documents on social networks regarding US and NATO plans for a planned counteroffensive by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
