A man was rescued this Friday after spending 278 hours trapped under the rubble of a building that collapsed on February 6 due to earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 that killed more than 41,000 people in Turkey and Syria.
Hakan Yasinoglu, a 45-year-old man, was found alive in a collapsed building in Antioch’s Defne district and taken to hospital, Turkish Anadolu news agency reported.
In the same area of Turkey Two other men were rescued this morning, and a 12-year-old boy from a Syrian family was freed from a landslide in a nearby area.
All three spent 261 hours in the ruins, almost 11 days.
Numbers after earthquakes
Both earthquakes resulted in the deaths of at least 38,000 people in Turkey, according to the latest update from Ankara, although it is estimated that the number will rise even more and possibly exceed 100,000 when it moves into the debris removal phase. While in Syria, 3,688 deaths are reported.
Turkish government vice president Fuat Oktay said this afternoon that search and rescue operations are still ongoing at 200 locations.
A total of 84,000 buildings are either destroyed or so badly damaged that they urgently need to be demolished, Urban Planning Minister Murat Kurum said Friday.
