This was announced on Tuesday by Colombian President Gustavo Petro. Summit Selak that he prefers that the old Russian weapons acquired by his country remain “trash” on his land, rather than be given away Ukraine.
Petro acknowledged that the head of the US Southern Command, Laura Richardson, asked her government to transfer weapons acquired in Russia to help the Ukrainian army in the conditions of the war in that country.
“I said that our Constitution has peace as order in the international arena. She’ll be left as scrap metal. Colombiabut we will not hand over Russian weapons,” Petro said at a press conference held as part of the 7th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (celac), being developed today in the Argentine capital.
“In past years, Colombia purchased Russian military equipment, helicopters, etc. For its own purposes, this equipment exists inside the country, it has stability problems, because assistance in changing parts is now impossible,” the President of Colombia added.
Thus, the president insisted that his cabinet was concerned about this conflict, so he would call on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to qualify the aggression as an international crime. “We are with no one, we are with the world, so weapons will not be used in this war,” he ruled.
Foreign Ministry protests against Petro
On the other hand, the Foreign Ministry sent a note to the Colombian embassy on Monday expressing Peru’s vigorous protest against President Gustavo Petro’s new intervention in domestic affairs.
Through the Twitter account of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was mentioned that the behavior of the President of Colombia does not comply with international law.
Last Saturday, President Gustavo Petro questioned the police operation at the National University of the Mayor of San Marcos, where 193 people were detained, of which 192 have already been released. Then the President of Colombia indicated that it was necessary to convene the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) to study the situation in our country.
Shortly thereafter, Cabinet Minister Alberto Otarola replied to the President of Colombia and told him to attend to his country’s affairs and that the Permanent Council of the OAS might well “consider the massacres that took place during his administration”.
