The Supreme Court of Nepal ordered the release of a Frenchman this Wednesday. Charles Sobhraia serial killer depicted as “The Serpent” in the Netflix series responsible for a string of murders in Asia during the 1970s.
The highest court in the Asian country ruled that 78-year-old Sobhraj is imprisoned in this prison. Himalayan Republic since 2003, for the murder of two American tourists, he had to be released on health grounds, according to the verdict seen by AFP.
“Having him permanently in prison is not in line with the rights of a prisoner,” the Supreme Court said.
“If no other case has been filed against him to keep him in jail, this court will rule on his release for today (Wednesday) and … return to his country within 15 days,” the court order says.
After a troubled childhood and several prison terms in France for petty crimes, Sobhraj began traveling the world in the early 1970s, arriving in the Thai capital. Bangkok.
His modus operandi was to charm and befriend his victims – many of them Western tourists in search of spirituality – before drugging, robbing and killing them.
Sweet and sophisticated, Sobhraj’s first murder was that of a young American woman whose body was found on a Pattaya beach in a bikini in 1975.
“Evil Killer”
“He was cultured, polite,” said Nadine Gires, who befriended Sobhraj when she moved into his home in Bangkok.
But he soon became fearful of his neighbor, who masqueraded as a gem dealer to lure in needy travelers before drugging, robbing and killing them.
“Many people got sick at home,” Gires told AFP last year. “He was not just a con man, a seducer, a tourist thief, but an evil killer,” he continued.
Sobhraj, a native of India and Vietnam, has been implicated in more than 20 murders. His victims were strangled, beaten, or burned, and he often used the passports of his male victims to get to his destination.
Sobhraj’s nickname “The Serpent” came from his ability to assume other identities to avoid justice. It became the title of a successful TV series produced by BBC D Netflix which was based on his life.
Life imprisonment
He was arrested in India in 1976 after a French tourist was poisoned to death in a hotel. Delhiand was sentenced to 12 years for murder.
Sobhraj ended up behind bars for 21 years, with a short break in 1986 when he escaped from prison and was recaptured in the Indian coastal state of Goa.
Released in 1997, Sobhraj went to Paris but reappeared in 2003 in Nepal, where he was spotted in the tourist area of Kathmandu and arrested.
The following year, a court sentenced him to life in prison for the 1975 murder of American tourist Connie Jo Bronzich.
Ten years later, he was also convicted of the murder of Bronzich’s compatriot, a Canadian.
In prison in 2008, Sobhraj married Nikhita Biswas, 44 years younger than he and his Nepali lawyer’s daughter, in a secret ceremony held in the prison.
Building on the popularity of the wedding, Biswas starred in India’s highly popular version of the TV show Big Brother in 2011.
Sobhraj has at least one daughter from a previous relationship who lives in France.
