Found a way to fight antibiotic-resistant bacteria

During the experiment, more than half of the patients had favorable clinical results.

About 35,000 people die each year from infections that are resistant to all antibiotics. So, a new study by scientists from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine showed encouraging results in the fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This was reported by Scitech Daily.

Viruses known as bacteriophages were first discovered in the early 20th century, and since then, as antibiotic-resistant bacteria have grown and spread, more research has been done to determine their therapeutic potential.

In 2016, scientists used experimental intravenous phage therapy to successfully treat and cure a colleague, Tom Patterson, who was near death from a multidrug-resistant bacterial infection.

The new study involved 20 patients with complicated mycobacterial infections that did not respond to antibiotic treatment. All patients have different symptoms, but most of them have bone fibrosis, an inherited progressive disease that affects the lungs and other organs. The average life expectancy of affected people, who survive to adulthood, is about 44 years.

Phage was administered to 20 study participants intravenously, aerosolized using a nebulizer. The patients received the drug twice a day for about six months. Half of the patients experienced an improvement in symptoms or a decrease in the presence of bacteria. In addition, scientists did not find any side effects after phage therapy.

Experts noted that the treatment of mycobacterial infections with phages is promising and should be explored further.

It was previously reported that scientists discovered that the causes of morning fatigue, where people feel tired even if they get enough sleep, are environmental.

In Canada, a robot was created for operations on hard-to-reach organs
