Scientists have discovered a unique interstellar structure near the land-a massive cloud of gas and dust, which for a long time has not been detected due to its “stiffness”.
Astronomers first discovered a new massive molecular cloud at a relatively near distance – just 300 light years from the ground. CNN report.
The unusual structure, named in the ancient goddess of Greek at dawn – has become a true discovery of scientific: it is 40 times wider than the moon and almost 3400 times more massive than the sun.
Molecular clouds are clusters of gas and dust where the stars are formed. However, the EOS has remained unnoticed for decades, as it hardly contains carbon monoxide, which usually “shines” on the radio and infrared spectrum and helps scientists repair such structures.
“This is the first molecular cloud in history, discovered by a direct search for long -term ultraviolet radiation of molecular hydrogen. Data has been shown by molecules that are bright with fluorescence in the incidence of ultraviolet. This cloud literally glows in the dark,” said the top of the Burkgart study.
It is possible to find a cloud thanks to the spectrograph, which decomposes the distant ultraviolet light to the length of the waves – such as creating the prism of a rainbow from ordinary light.
“The only reason we saw him was that we looked at another spectrum,” explained the co -Author of the study, Astrophysicist Thomas Gavort.
According to scientists, the EOS can help better understand how interstellar gases change in stars and planets. Astronome Melisa Mcklyur from Leiden University emphasized: “It’s like if you live in a suburb in the houses and suddenly realizes that in one of the open areas is actually an underground bunker.”
This discovery not only expands ideas about molecular clouds, but also changes the approach to observing the nearest cosmos with us.
